The British Conservatives are working on a strategy to counter Scotland’s growing support for independence. According to Bloomberg news agency, a memo about this is circulating among leaders of Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s party, including the influential minister Michael Gove.
The note sets out how to respond if the Scottish National Party, which is in favor of an independent Scotland, wins elections in May, which is increasingly likely.
Just saying not to allow a new independence referendum would be “counterproductive.” Instead, the Tories should consider handing over more power to the Edinburgh government to counteract the desire for independence, a consultancy company memo said. The EU could also be manipulated to destroy the idea of Scotland joining as an independent country. According to a source within the party, a working group has been set up to discuss the issue.
Majority Scotland want independence
Scotland has been part of the United Kingdom for centuries, but the number of Scots seeking independence is reaching record highs. According to recent research by Ipsos, 58 percent of Scots would vote for it. Nearly two-thirds of Scots believe the British Parliament should allow a new independence referendum within five years if the Scottish National Party (SNP) regains a majority in the Scottish Parliament in May.
In a referendum in 2014, 55 percent of Scots still rejected independence. However, the majority voted against Brexit in 2016, but they still had to leave the EU. Prime Minister and SNP leader Nicola Sturgeon has made a new plebiscite part of its 2021 election campaign, pleading with the EU for support for Scottish independence.
