British Ambassador to Lebanon: We will support Lebanese Army with US$16 million worth

The British ambassador to Lebanon, Hamish Cowell, announced, in a statement to the embassy, a “commitment of £13 million to support the resilience of the Lebanese army from 2022 to 2025, in a memorandum of understanding signed with the commander of the Lebanese army, General Joseph Aoun.”

The statement added: “During the meeting of the High Oversight Committee on the Land Border Protection Aid Program, Ambassador Cowell, US Ambassador Dorothy Shea and Canadian Ambassador Stephanie McCollum met with General Aoun to discuss security on the Lebanese-Syrian border.

The joint border project has strengthened the Lebanese state’s authority along its land border with Syria, where four land border regiments have been deployed from the north to Al-Aridah and from the south to Jabal Al-Sheikh.

After the meeting, Ambassador Cowell said, “This Memorandum of Understanding expresses our commitment to continue our support and cooperation with the Lebanese Armed Forces.

Since 2009, the UK has allocated more than £87 million, enabling the Lebanese Army to improve its capabilities, develop and keep pace with the times. We are proud of our contribution to building the Lebanese Armed Forces’ reputation as a respected and professional armed force capable of defending Lebanon and providing security along its borders with Syria.”

He added: “I had the honor of meeting the Lebanese Army Commander, General Joseph Aoun, and attending the first meeting of the Higher Vigilance Committee. The Lebanese Army plays a vital role in protecting Lebanon and its people. I am very impressed by the courage shown by your men and women.”
