“Bring the accused in” on RMC Story: how are cases chosen?

The show returns to the case ” Fabienne Kabou, the infanticide of Berck “. For twenty-one years, the way of choosing the cases treated in the program has always been the same.

This Sunday, October 17, 2021, viewers will discover the 267e episode of Let the accused enter . If three people have followed one another during the presentation of the program (Christophe Hondelatte, Frédérique Lantieri and now Rachid M’Barki) and that the program changed channels in 2020 – from France 2 To RMC Story – the way of building the show has never changed.

Follow the movements of society

Thus, the subjects of the eight unpublished episodes of this new season were chosen in the same way as the first, broadcast twenty-one years ago.

The production has several golden rules. In order for us to be interested in a case, all avenues of appeal must have been exhausted and it must be finally judged. It is an ethical rule from which we have never deviated ”,explains Isabelle Clairac, the editor in chief of the show. The advantage is that the police and the magistrates can talk to us ”.

The background of the story and its societal impact are also of paramount importance for the team carrying out the program. We are not a news program but a legal program, a documentary collection. The sordid nature of the various facts is not a motive, the originality of the facts is not sufficient either. What interests us is the path between the criminal facts and the decision that justice will take. It also allows us to follow the movements of society. We have to learn something from the case. This can concern forensic science and its new techniques, a law or even an emerging social issue… When a legal case opens enough doors and questions to give food for thought, we go ”,she continues.

Four months of work

During each season, the editor-in-chief presents a dozen proposals to the channel, which chooses eight of them. When the decision is made, it takes four months to make each show.

In all, nine people participate in the development of the program: a director, a cameraman, a sound engineer, an editor, a librarian, an editorial assistant, an editor as well as the two presenters. As a preamble, the director embarks on eight weeks of investigation. He retrieves the file and peels it. He is looking for the various interlocutors (family, general counsel, police officers, investigators, survivors, magistrates, etc.) who would agree to speak. He prepares his driver and then goes on filming for three weeks.

The show is finalized after five weeks of editing and then comes the boxing of the trays with Rachid M’Barki and Dominique Rizet.
