Brilliant pair: ‘Rummikuppen three times and then to bed’ | 1Limburg

Nel and Piet Heesen from Sevenum are a couple for 65 years. The brilliant wedding should have been a celebration with family, friends, neighbors and other acquaintances. Corona threw a spanner in the works.

She is 94, he a year younger. They lived through the war, but looking back, they think that time is less bad than the current limitations caused by the corona pandemic. ”Of course we were still young then and we didn’t look at anything, but we were not hungry here. Now you can hardly do anything anymore. I went shopping myself once since March. Other than that, you sit at home ”, says Nel.

Rummikuppen
And the two nineties don’t like sitting at home. Piet Heesen, better known locally as Hèze Pietje worked with his wife as an independent landlady for over thirty years. The café De Sevewaeg is still there but is now run by son Ton. Piet was happy to come there before the corona outbreak. But now that is no longer possible. Nel: “It’s three times at home rummikuppen and then to bed.”

Dance together
Sunday, exactly 65 years ago, they got married. A few years after they first danced together. “That was not about dancing, but about holding,” laughs Piet. It turned into a romance that continues to this day. “65 years. Not many of them make it. ”

Last party?
That is precisely why they wanted to make it a big party. “Probably the last thing we will celebrate together. I sometimes wonder whether it will happen now. It could just take years for things to return to normal. Whether we still have that time remains to be seen. ”

Card of the king
Despite the fact that there was no party, the brilliant wedding party did not go unnoticed this weekend. Nel and Piet celebrated it in a very small circle with their three children. And all the grandchildren and great-grandchildren got in touch by video calling them. The postman also worked overtime. Nel: “I think there were at least 150 cards. Even from the king and the governor. That is very nice to read together in the evening. They have not yet forgotten us in the village. ”
