Double strength helps FTC

With a strong team performance, the tennis players of the Freiburger TC in the Oberliga achieved their first win of the season. There was a 5:4 win against TC Bischweier at the start of the season at home. The veterans Dominic Palm, Martin Brkle and Marcus Bierlein scored in the singles. The Indian Vishnu Vardhan, who plays for the FTC, lost the top single against Franco Roncadelli from Uruguay in a “match at ATP level” (trainer Matthias Birkle) 4:6 and 5:7. After a 3-3 draw, two doubles wins tipped the scales in favor of Freiburg. “That’s where the training work pays off, because we have a lot going on together here,” said Birkle.

Mandatory victory for FTC women

The top league tennis players from Freiburg TC II landed a 6:3 away win at TC Tengen. FTC head coach Eva Birkle-Belbl also spoke of a “very successful start to the season” with a view to the men’s victory. In Tengen, the players in positions three to six (Magdalena Seng, Iris Danne, Philippa Drees and Stella Schwrer) achieved four individual victories. “In doubles we played it home confidently with the experience of Magdalena and Anja Fimpel,” said Birkle-Belbl. “I’m glad we got this mandatory win.” The aim of the season for the promoted team is to remain in the league. Callabis single-handedly

Jolanda Kallabis (FT 1844 Freiburg) ran a German U-18 best performance at the Baden-Württemberg Steeplechase Championship in Pliezhausen. In 6:23.82 minutes, she undercut her record over 2000 meters by almost five seconds. “It was a bit of a shame that I had to run alone up there because it’s mentally tough when you’re setting your own pace all the time,” said Kallabis. A week earlier, the 17-year-old student from the Staudinger school improved her personal best by more than half a second when she won the 400-metre hurdles in 60.17 seconds in Engen. Kallabis thus fulfilled the norm for the U-18 European Championship.

PTSV Jahn becomes champion

With the victory in the joint second round competition in Wyhl, the gymnasts of the PTSV Jahn Freiburg secured the championship title in the Oberliga Baden. After second place in the preliminary round, coach Uwe Staich’s team scored 123.150 points and was ahead of TSV Wiesental (120.4) and TV Muggensturm (119.50), who had won the first series of competitions. The PTSV gymnasts had to do without Eva Foth and Pauline Hain. But the short-term commitment of Marie Rosewich, who actually starts for the second division promoted TG Breisgau, should have a positive effect on the last apparatus: Her outstanding practice, including one and a half twists backwards, meant the daily high of 12.25 points. Sabine Storz secured second place in the individual ranking (42.65). Host TV Wyhl improved to fourth place in the rematch with 117.60 points, which means fifth place out of seven teams in the final table.
