Brendan Fraser has been through depression. In a few years he changed beyond recognition

In the 1990s, he was one of the actors’ sex symbols, and more than one lady’s knees broke from him. The story of Brendan Fraser (53) is an example of how negatively Hollywood can affect a person. The actor has struggled with depression in the past and has also put on a lot of weight. Now, after a long time, he is returning to the screen in the upcoming film The Whale, where he will portray a 270 kilogram teacher.

Brendan Fraser can be remembered by fans, for example, from the films King of the Jungle or The Mummy and its sequel. At the time of his greatest fame, the actor was proud of his great form, well-developed body and enormous charisma. The combination of these factors secured him roles in well-known films and undoubtedly ensured that the doors to Hollywood opened for him. But then came the flip side of fame and information began to leak to the public that the actor struggles with depression.

Did you know that your four-legged pets can also suffer from depression?

“When I shot the third Mummy, I was only held together by duct tape,” the actor said in an interview with GQ magazine in 2018. He was often a stuntman for himself in films and this, he says, caused him to spend about seven years in hospitals. He underwent several surgeries, including two lumbar laminectomies. In his personal life, he went through an unpleasant and expensive divorce, and his mother died, which also affected him negatively. “I was going through things that really affected me and I wasn’t prepared for,” Fraser revealed.

In the same interview, he talked about his experiences with sexual harassment. In 2003, he was allegedly touched inappropriately by the former president of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, Philip Berk. He was supposed to shake the actor’s hand during lunch and then inappropriately touch his bottom.

“I felt terrible. I felt like a little kid. I felt like I had a ball in my throat. I thought I was going to cry,” Fraser described his feelings at the time. Berk has denied all the allegations, but has sent an apology letter to the actor in the past. Brendan, who, among other things, was convinced that because of this incident he had stopped receiving job offers, then he withdrew into seclusion and was neither seen nor heard of for a long time.

Fraser will appear in the lead role after almost 10 years

Now, after more than nine years, Fraser is returning to the big screen in director Darren Aronofsky’s upcoming drama. The Whale is an adaptation of the 2012 play of the same name by Samuel D. Hunter. It deals with the life of an obese English teacher named Charlie, his struggles and also his efforts to save his damaged relationship with his teenage daughter. They became estranged after Charlie left her and her mother for his lover.

The film is to be shown at the Venice Film Festival this September, and in connection with its premiere, the first teaser has already been released in the form of a photo of Fraser with make-up and makeup. The one in the picture weighs over 270 kilograms. The actor’s appearance is the result of great work by makeup artists, he had to wear very strong make-up and artificial prosthetics. “The costume was big and cumbersome,” said Fraser. “This is certainly a far cry from anything I’ve ever done. I have to admit I haven’t seen any real footage yet, but I know it will make a lasting impression,” Fraser told the website in an interview web Unilad.

It should be noted that the actor himself has changed a lot as a result of difficult life vicissitudes and unpleasant experiences – his hair thinned and he gained a lot of weight. Will his new role be a spectacular return to the world of film? Let us be surprised.
