Bremen: Sea rescuers expect a slight decrease in donations due to Corona – news from Bremen

The German Society for the Rescue of Shipwrecked People (DGzRS) expects fewer donations in 2020 than in the previous year. “The trend is that we will be a few percent below the result of the previous year in terms of collection revenue,” said spokeswoman Antke Reemts. It is hoped that the percentage will be in the low single digits. In 2019 the DGzRS received 25.4 million euros in donations, plus an additional 20.4 million euros from earmarked donations and bequests.

The headquarters of the German sea rescuers are in Bremen

We are very grateful to the donors that donations in 2020 did not collapse significantly, although the planned events were canceled due to the corona, among other things, says Reemts. Open-ship events, demonstrations at port festivals, exhibitions, tours of the rescue cruisers, visits the stations or at the headquarters of the sea rescuers in Bremen – none of that is currently possible. “As a result, there is no direct, personal contact with the people, with the donors.” According to Antke Reemts, it is important that the donors can understand at events, for example, what the sea rescuers use the money for, among other things.

The new rescue cruiser is within reach for the people. “Many people support the rescue services with regular donations, but events are often the incentive to take a closer look at our work,” says Reemts. The DGzRS is therefore trying to compensate for the unusual events with digital formats. Sea Rescue Day in July 2020 was celebrated on the Internet, and a webinar format is being worked on for people who are interested in the DGzRS.

Sea Rescue Day digital this time

According to Reemts, the digital day of sea rescuers has been very successful. Instead of the up to 30,000 visitors who come to the events on the coast every year, several hundred thousand people were reached on the Internet. “All rescue stations took part with videos and virtual tours that were viewed more than half a million times on Youtube,” says Reemts. The video material had a total length of four hours and 29 minutes, and some films were also shared in the social networks. According to Reemts, the film from the Zingst sea rescue station, for example, reached more than 250,000 people. Whether the Sea Rescue Day 2021 will also have to take place digitally cannot yet be foreseen.

Fundraising events such as the ice contest rehearsal or the ice contest were completely canceled. While the question of whether the Weser is frozen over or not is answered at the ice competition rehearsal on January 6th, donations are collected for the DGzRS at the ice competition. Last year the record sum of 482,242 euros was raised. Although the event is canceled this year, the presidium of the 1928 ice bet has called for donations, according to Antke Reemts. The aim is to collect at least 150,000 euros, but there is no time limit. “Well over half of the donation has already been received,” says Reemts happily.
