Breaking curfew, two men sentenced to squat 300 times and then 1 killed the next day

MANILA, KOMPAS.com – A Filipino man has died after allegedly being forced by village guards to do 300 squats.

The victim’s family said the order was given as punishment for violating quarantine the corona virus.

Darren Manaog Penaredondo was caught buying drinking water after 6pm. He was then accused of violating the Covid curfew in the city of General Trias, in the province of Cavite, according to reports Rappler.

The province is under “strict community quarantine status,” which includes a curfew from 6pm to 5am.

Penaredondo’s partner, Reichelyn Balce, told Rappler that Penaredondo and other men who were suspected of violating the Covid-19 ban, on Thursday last week (1/4/2021).

They were then “taken to Plaza Malabon in front of the city hall. There the security guards initially ordered them to squat 100 times on.

Authorities allegedly said the couple would be forced to repeat the exercises if they did not get along.

Because of that warning, the two of them ended up having to do the exercises, squat movements, as many as 300 times, wrote Balce in an upload at Facebook.

Peñaredondo arrived home at 8 a.m. the next morning.

According to Balce’s story, the 28-year-old could barely move without assistance because he was so tired. Penaredondo told Balce that he also fell “several times” while carrying out the sentence.

“All day, he struggled to walk, he just crawled,” he wrote.

Later that same day, his brother started to have a seizure and suddenly his heart stopped.

He regained consciousness briefly, but then died around 10 pm.

The city’s police chief, lieutenant colonel Marlo Nillo Solero, told Rappler that there was no such punishment for people who violated Covid-19 restrictions.

Mayor General Trias Antonio Ferrer, confirmed in a Facebook statement that an investigation was underway.

“Brother, goodbye, we love you very much,” wrote Balce.

“We will not allow justice to be denied for your losses.”

The Philippine government extended the national lockdown by one more week on Monday (5/4/2021), after coronavirus infections began to flood hospitals in the capital and remote areas.

The Philippines has reported more than 795,000 cases with 13,425 deaths, the highest number in Southeast Asia after Indonesia.
