Brazilian Minister of Health has resigned

Brazilian Minister of Health Nelson Teich resigned on Friday for “differences of opinion on measures” to fight the coronavirus with the government, sources in the ministry told AFP. Mr. Teich has been a very short-lived Minister of Health for President Jair Bolsonaro: he occupied this crucial portfolio for Brazil for less than a month, where the pandemic is growing exponentially and has already killed nearly 14,000 people.

“The Minister of Health, Nelson Teich, has resigned this morning,” announced the ministry, adding that a press conference was scheduled for the day.

Sources contacted by AFP added that the minister, an oncologist, had resigned because of disagreements with President Bolsonaro, in particular on chloroquine treatments, which the latter advocates, although their effectiveness has not been proven scientifically.

Nelson Teich had replaced on April 17 the popular Minister of Health Luiz Henrique Mandetta, also a doctor by training, sacked by Jair Bolsonaro after a succession of divergences displayed in the open in the fight against coronavirus.

The Brazilian president is fiercely opposed to containment measures in this country of 210 million inhabitants in the name of saving jobs and the Brazilian economy.
