FORT LAUDERDALE, Florida, USA (AP) – A Brazilian who died in a plane crash in South America in 2005 is responsible for the murder of three women in Florida two decades ago, authorities said Tuesday.

Broward County Sheriff Gregory Tony said DNA tests clearly identified the killer as Roberto Fernandes, who fled to Brazil in 2001 after the body of his third victim was found in Miami. At that time the police wanted to question Fernandes, but Brazil has no extradition treaty with the United States.

Tony said at a press conference that “justice never expires” even if decades pass after an unsolved crime. He said that Fernandes was a “suspected serial killer” who could have left other victims.

There are cases that go “months, even years, unsolved,” Tony said.

The first victim, found on June 22, 2000 in Cooper Coty, Florida, was Kimberly Dietz-Livesey. His bruised body was in a suitcase on the side of a road. On August 9, 2000, the body of Sia Demas, also beaten to death, was found in a duffel bag along another road near Dania Beach, Florida.

A year later, on August 30, 2000, they found the body of Jessica Good floating in the Bay of Biscay. They had stabbed her to death.
