Brazil plans to buy 100 million Chinese CoronaVac vaccine doses – Xinhua

BRASILIA, Jan. 8 (Xinhua) – Brazil has signed an agreement with the Butantan Institute in Sao Paulo to purchase 100 million doses of the corona vaccine CoronaVac, which was developed by the Chinese company Sinovac, said Brazilian Health Minister Eduardo Pazuello on Thursday.

The first 46 million cans will be delivered in April and a further 54 million cans by the end of the year, said Pazuello at a press conference.

All of the Butantane Institute’s vaccine doses will be included in the national immunization plan and distributed fairly across the country, said the Brazilian Minister of Health.

President Jair Bolsonaro made the purchase of the CoronaVac vaccine possible through a decree he issued on Wednesday. The decree allows the Brazilian government to buy the corona vaccines without waiting for the green light from the National Health Surveillance Authority, Pazuello said.

On Thursday, the country reported a new high with 87,843 new corona cases in one day and 1,524 more deaths.
