The American Magazine Time chose Guilherme Boulos, leader of the Brazilian Homeless Workers Movement (MTST), as one of the 100 emerging leaders who are shaping the future. The annual list, called “Time 100 Next”, was released on Wednesday (02/17).
According to the publication, “after two years of the controversial presidency of Jair Bolsonaro, the fragmented Brazilian left has found it difficult to unite around a leader to challenge the extreme right.” But “Guilherme Boulos started to change that.”
Boulos ran for the Presidency of the Republic in 2018, but in terms of electoral results, his most important candidacy was last year, when he ran for mayor of São Paulo, even reaching the second round against the current mayor Bruno Covas . He was re-elected with 59.4 percent of the votes, compared to 40.6 percent for the PSOL candidate.
“A month before the first round of the election, he was in fourth place as a minority party candidate, with only 10 percent of the expected votes. But, by winning over young people and energizing disillusioned voters with the ruling left of the Workers’ Party, Boulos defeated Bolsonaro’s favorite candidate, among others, to reach the second round, ”he says Time.
Although he lost the elections in São Paulo, the magazine claims that “Boulos’s surprising performance in the influential city established him as a rising figure in Brazilian politics and gave the left a new way forward.”
