Brazil accepts IOC donation and will vaccinate Olympic delegation | olympics

The federal government is going to vaccinate the members of the Brazilian delegation that will go to Japan for the Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics. The decision is made by the Ministry of Health in conjunction with the Ministry of Defense and the Brazilian Olympic Committee. The country decided to accept assistance from the International Olympic Committee. With this, about 1500 people – including athletes, members of the technical committee and journalists involved in the coverage – will join the priority group of the National Immunization Plan (PNI). Vaccines will be provided by the IOC and will not be released from doses obtained by the Federal Government to immunize the population. And for each dose given to immunize the Brazilian delegation that goes to the Olympics, the IOC will donate two more to SUS to vaccinate Brazilians. More details of the delegation’s vaccination plan will be announced this Tuesday, at 11:30 am, at a press conference at the Ministry of Health in Brasília.

The Minister of Health, Marcelo Queiroga, the Minister of Citizenship, João Roma, the Special Secretary of Sport, Marcelo Magalhães, and the Director of the Department of Military Sports of the Ministry of Defense, Major-Brigadeiro Isaias Carvalho, in addition to the vice president of the Brazilian Olympic Committee (COB), Marco Antônio La Porta Júnior, will participate in the press conference. The start of vaccination for Brazilian athletes would start on Friday, the 14th.

In March, the ge reported that Brazilian military athletes would be vaccinated as a priority group of the Armed Forces, according to the Ministry of Health. The COB has always stated that “the entity will follow the PNI”. Now, it was up to the COB to draw up the final list with the names that will go to Tokyo. The operation will use Armed Forces facilities in six Brazilian capitals. In addition to the Time Brazil CT, at Maria Lenk, in Rio de Janeiro.

Several countries around the world are immunizing their delegations to compete at the Tokyo Olympics. On Tuesday, Australia, for example, started vaccinating its accredited ones. Other countries have also placed athletes in the priority group for vaccination against Covid-19, such as Belgium, Spain, New Zealand, Germany, Mexico, among others. The IOC has publicly said that vaccines will not be mandatory for athletes to compete in the Games.

IOC donation via China

According to IOC President Thomas Bach, the China offered vaccines to all athletes who will compete in the Olympics. Brazil accepted the IOC’s offer, and the doses will be delivered to the Federal Government. For each member of the Brazilian delegation that will go to Tokyo, two more doses will be offered to the population. And these donated vaccines will be included in the SUS vaccination plan. The COB runs out of time to vaccinate the athletes, as the Olympics are less than three months away and a large part of the delegation travels to Japan beforehand.

Brazil still does not know all its qualifiers for the Olympics, since with the postponement or cancellation of several competitions due to the pandemic, the qualifying tournaments and the deadlines have been extended. Therefore, the list of vaccinees tends to be longer to cover all athletes who still have a chance of a place. At the moment, the country has 213 guaranteed places at the Games.

Some athletes and members of the technical committee have already been vaccinated, either because they are on the list of the Armed Forces or because they are health professionals, such as Physical Education teachers.

According to an unofficial survey, about 80 athletes and members of the technical committee have already been vaccinated outside Brazil.
