Braunschweig: Coronavirus! This is how scientists want to stop him

Braunschweig. The fear of the new corona virus is spreading. The first cases have also been reported in Germany. Scientist Brunswick are working to prevent the virus from spreading.

At the Helmholtz Center for Infection Research (HZI) in Brunswick Scientists have developed an app called “Sormas”, which has already been used successfully for other epidemics, so that it can be used to monitor the spread of viruses. It gives authorities and others a quick overview of exactly how many people have been infected.

Braunschweig: Modern app to stop infections

The app is particularly suitable for use in regions where the infrastructure is rather poor. With their help, data on the onset of the disease can be recorded on site and transmitted to health authorities. This enables the authorities to make risk assessments and plan measures to combat epidemics.

Individual illnesses can thus be recorded immediately, clinical details and laboratory confirmations documented and all contact persons noted. Thereby, therapy can also be offered to them quickly should they also become ill.

The app can also stop the spread of Ebola and measles

With the new corona virus module, the app can now be used for a total of 20 different infectious diseases – including Ebola, lasso fever, monkey pox, bird flu, dengue fever, yellow fever, measles, meningitis, plague, cholera, rabies and anthrax. The app has already been used in Nigeria and Ghana and can be used worldwide.

“Thanks to the flexible building block concept of ‘Sormas’, we were able to activate the specific coronavirus module within a few days,” says virologist Dr. Juliane Dörrbecker, who led the work on the complex app update. However, it would be best if the app did not have to be used by us.
