Braindrops: basketball players start with a podcast format

“I needed something to practice with. The best thing is a passion project, ”says Lennart Stechmann of the creation of the podcast format“ Braindrops ”. The psychology student and former basketball player from BG Göttingen did not have to think long about who to bring on board. Domenik Theodorou, fitness coach and team manager of the violets, did not hesitate and agreed to support his long-time friend. The two are now producing a one-hour podcast every week – and it doesn’t always have to do with basketball.

Stechmann studies in Würzburg and is in the middle of the master’s program in psychology. He should develop podcasts for career guidance for the psychological career guidance “myfutureguide”. “I noticed that it was not that easy,” says the 26-year-old. “When Lennart asked, I was initially surprised. I often listen to podcasts myself and we quickly had ideas about guests and content, ”reports Theodorou. Both worked into the technical requirements and then had to find a common denominator, as their podcast listening habits differed considerably. While the fitness trainer pays more attention to “content”, the student preferred “comedy” rather than distraction.

Stockton and El-Amin were added

After three introductory podcasts with information on the two protagonists and on the topics “fertilizer for the brain” and “sleep”, BG basketball player Adam Waleskowski was the first guest – the conversation, which lasted over an hour, was conducted in English. No problem for the two, because Theodorou studied English as a teacher and Stechmann also feels comfortable in the basketball language. Neither of them have their own studio. If guests from Göttingen are there, they sit with Theodorou and Stechmann joins in from Würzburg. But there were also episodes with a three-way switch, for example with Michael Stockton, the violet captain of the previous season, who chatted from France or with the playmaker Khalid El-Amin, who was unforgettable in Göttingen and who was sitting in Minneapolis in the USA and relaxed talkt.

The discussions with the currently youngest BG player Bennet Hundt, with the former violet player and current assistant coach of the regional league team ASC 46 Göttingen, Harper Kamp, and the “statistics specialist” of the BG Göttingen, Julian, were also about basketball Meier. Both have looked outside the box in discussions with British athletics trainer Jordan Godfrey and with Neele Eckhardt, triple jumper at LG Göttingen. A completely different topic came up with Johanna Scheilin, who spoke about her experience with the disease cystic fibrosis and her daily struggle with its consequences.

Rap song as the namesake

Stechmann and Theodorou hope that their listeners “can always filter out a few brain drops for themselves from all the conversations”. The name of the podcast is more of a coincidence. The 34-year-old fitness coach had a rap song as catchy tune, in which he had always understood “braindrops” instead of “raindrops”. “It somehow fit. “Brain” stood for content and “Drops” for the little things that every listener can filter out. “

While collecting experience in this area, the duo also looks at the numbers. However, a good 300 followers on Instagram and well over 500 subscribers suggest that their consequences will be heard. The feedback is “cool”, both wish that the violet fans get to know the players better in the one-hour podcasts. Because all of the guests, Stechmann and Theodorou, were equally known, the atmosphere was always very relaxed. “Maybe the first five minutes were a bit tough, but then it worked. Most of the time we teased out something special for everyone and sometimes we take each other up a bit, ”tell the friends, who have lived together for three years. Incidentally, the conversations are only cut if there is a shortage of technology in between.

Roijakkers is on the wish list

Denis Wucherer, coach of the s.Oliver Baskets Würzburg, will be a guest on Wednesday, May 20. The contact was made by Stechmann, who plays for Pro B at the Würzburg Baskets. BG head coach Johan Roijakkers is high on the wish list. “He listens regularly, gives us feedback and would like to get the podcasts before they appear,” says Theodorou. Both still have many interview partners in the pipeline. They want to remain authentic and keep tickling something interesting out of their counterpart.

The Braindrops podcasts can be downloaded from all popular podcast apps.
