Brad Pitt has noticeably taken a step back in the number of movie roles he takes on in recent years, but it looks like he’ll show himself even less in the coming years. The actor says he is in the “final phase of his career”. And that, they say, is one without alcohol and cigarettes.

Talking to the magazine GQ Brad Pitt indicates that he is winding down his film career. “I consider myself in the final phase. I am in my last semester or trimester. How will this phase go? And how do I want to shape it?”, it sounds in the interview. “I am one of those beings who speak through art. I just always want to make something. If I’m not creating, in a sense I’m dying.”

No alcohol
Although the actor does not yet have a clear plan for his “final phase”, he is determined that it must be a meaningful period. “During my life I have often felt lonely. I grew up alone and that feeling was reinforced when I moved to Los Angeles,” said the actor. “Actually, it was only in recent years that I started to realize that I had enough sweet and nice people around me all along, but I just didn’t feel that way. Looking back on my life, I always struggled with a mild depression, but I suppressed it. Now I have much more joie de vivre and I appreciate music, for example, it makes me happy and calm.”

Since his divorce from Angelina Jolie in 2016, Pitt says he has a new outlook on life and also decided to renounce alcohol and cigarettes. “My visits to AA meetings have taught me a lot. I was part of a great group of men with whom I could be myself completely without fear of things getting leaked to the press. That safety net is really worth gold and I am very grateful for it. Quitting smoking was also something big for me: I’m not someone who can smoke two cigarettes a day, I immediately puff away a pack. So the only way was to stop everything completely and that makes me feel better than ever.”

If Pitt finally decides to stop his acting career, Hollywood will lose one of the last great movie stars, director Quentin Tarantino previously said. “He’s just a different kind of person. And honestly, I don’t think I can describe exactly what it’s in. I noticed it when we were working on Inglorious bastards† Once he was in the shot I didn’t feel like I was looking through a camera but felt like I was already watching a movie. Just his presence in the frame made that happen.”
