Many holidaymakers wait until the last minute to book. Campsites in the province are also noticeable: “We have so many guests who call and say, I’m not sure yet”, says Coby Mathijssen from Hof van Overveld in Prinsenbeek. “We don’t ask for money yet if people reserve with reservation, that makes no sense.”

They are also a bit looser in other campsites. They fear that otherwise they are only busy with chargebacks and that does not come to pass.

The fact that it became known on Tuesday that the campsites may throw their sanitary facilities on June 15 is good news for the campsites. Although they were already very happy with their bookings at De Paal in Bergeijk. The middle four weeks of the holiday were already going well there, and the first weeks of July and the last weeks of August, the so-called shoulder weeks when school holidays in the Netherlands have not yet started, are going better than in previous years.

“If you can’t put restrictions into perspective, your vacation can be and remain a problem.”

The survey also shows that people like to stay close to home during this summer vacation. They especially do not feel like a holiday abroad when a lockdown is imminent. How are they supposed to go home? What should they do if they get sick there? They are also afraid of not arriving at their destination due to travel restrictions or that the accommodation is not open and that they will not get their money back.

That people do not go far away on holiday is not so much to do with the virus or fear of it, thinks Ondrej Mitas of Breda University of Applied Sciences and a teacher of statistics, tourism and happiness. It is the limitations that people react badly to. “How do you deal with that?” He wonders. “If you can’t put those restrictions into perspective, it can be and remain a problem. But if you accept them and look at what is still possible, then it doesn’t have to be a big problem.”

Many people now go camping. One is an abomination for one and the other the highlight of the summer. “The second group will have significantly less difficulty with the limitations of corona than the first group. But it is better for the planet,” Mitas laughs.
