BPOM Allows Sinovac Vaccine for Children 6-11 Years Old

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia

National Agency of Drug and Food Control (BPOM) issued an Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) for the corona virus (covid-19) vaccine produced by a Chinese company, Sinovac, targeting children aged 6-11 years.

Head of BPOM Penny K Lukito said the issuance of the EUA had gone through a joint assessment of the National Immunization Expert Advisory Committee (ITAGI) on vaccine quality data referring to internationally applicable vaccine quality evaluation guidelines.

“So now the use of the Sinovac vaccine can be used for children 6 to 11 years old,” said Penny in an online press conference, Monday (1/11).

Penny called this decision to be good news for a number of people, especially parents.

“We believe that vaccination of children is urgent now, especially since PTM has started,” said Penny.

After this announcement, he said, later the experts would convey the urgency and priorities as well as comprehensive issues why children need to be vaccinated.

Previously, Minister of Health (Menkes) Budi Gunadi Sadikin had targeted that the COVID-19 vaccination program for children aged 5-11 years could be held in early 2022, in line with the completion of clinical trials and receiving EUA from BPOM.

Budi said there are three brands of Covid-19 vaccines that are conducting clinical trials on children. Namely, vaccines produced by Sinovac, Sinopharm, and Pfizer.
