Federal Police: Well prepared for summer vacation by plane

The desire to travel is great, many people want to go on vacation again. The great interest in air travel poses a major challenge for everyone involved at the airports, e.g. at the check-in counters or the aviation security and border control points. In short: it could get very crowded – especially at peak times. This can lead to longer waiting times in the meantime. The Federal Police have the following tips for you so that the holiday feeling doesn’t end at the airport:

Find out in advance about the current situation at the airports. Use the websites of the airport operators and also the social media channels of the Federal Police. Before you start your journey, please make sure that your travel documents (passport or identity card) or other documents required for your return to Germany are still valid. Arrive at the airport on time! Be at airport security at least 90 minutes prior to boarding. Attention: Boarding time is not the same as departure time. Go there right after check-in. Prepare as best you can for the controls. If possible, only take hand luggage with you on the plane.

The following applies to aviation security checks:

liquids

Less is more. Liquids that you do not urgently need on board belong in checked baggage. The liquid containers that are transported in hand luggage may hold a maximum of 100 milliliters. In addition, all containers must be placed in a clear, resealable plastic bag. This can have a maximum capacity of one liter. Baby food and liquid medication may be transported in hand luggage with appropriate proof.

Prohibited Items

Things that never belong in hand luggage: firearms of any kind, pepper spray and knives with a blade length of more than six centimeters have no place in hand luggage. However, even objects that do not pose a risk at first glance are not allowed to be taken on the plane. This includes, for example, screwdrivers, long nail files or tent pegs.

What belongs in the luggage tray, what can stay in the bag? The resealable plastic bag with the liquid containers should be placed separately in the tub. All electronic devices such as mobile phones, cameras, laptops and tablets must also be placed separately in a luggage tray. After the X-ray, a follow-up check may be necessary. The baggage contents, especially electronic devices, can be checked for explosives with a wipe test. In addition, passengers may be asked to turn on electronic devices to demonstrate functionality.

Summarized:

Please bring a maximum of one piece of hand luggage with you to the check. Check in more baggage. Only take the personal items in your hand luggage that you actually need during your stay on the plane. Use the time up to the security check and please take off your jacket, remove your hat, leave smaller items such as cash or keys in your jacket pocket or in your hand luggage, but not in your trouser pocket. These must be completely empty. Separate liquids and electronic devices and have them ready.

The following applies to border control:

For a fast and smooth border control, both on entry and exit, it is also very important that

 you have your travel documents (passport or identity card) and any other documents that may be required to hand,  there are no other documents or other items in your passport and no protective covers are used.

If you are a citizen of the European Union and older than 12 years, you can use the partially automated EasyPASS system for border control at the airports in Berlin Brandenburg, Düsseldorf, Frankfurt am Main, Hamburg, Hanover, Cologne/Bonn, Munich and Stuttgart. For more information, see www.easypass.de.

When traveling to Germany, please be sure to find out about the current corona-related entry requirements. Information is available at www.bmi.bund.de in the topic “FAQ on the corona virus and Covid-19 chatbot”.
