Serious riots before the round of 16 of the Spanish Cup overshadowed the match between Real Sociedad and Atletico Madrid.

Disturbing scenes from Spain: Before the round of 16 of the Spanish Soccer Cup between Real Sociedad San Sebastian and Atletico Madrid, there were serious riots on Wednesday evening (January 19, 2022).

At the end of a turbulent evening of football, Atletico lost 2-0, Adnan Januzaj (33rd) and ex-Leipziger Alexander Sorloth (47th) scored for the hosts. But the fans from San Sebastian provided a topic of conversation.

When Atletico arrived at the stadium (Estadio Anoeta) with two buses, an angry crowd of Sociedad fans was waiting for the guests. The team was initially greeted by coach Diego Simeone (51) with shouts of abuse and wild middle finger gestures. Then the situation escalated and stones, bottles, metal grids and firecrackers were thrown.

Five windows on the vehicle were broken. It was initially not clear whether there were any injuries after the attacks. Only when the crowds had attacked the visiting team and some fans kicked the doors of the buses did the police intervene.

The buses were finally shielded with blue lights and numerous emergency vehicles. Videos of the riots were posted on Twitter. An angry Simeone can be seen on the bus. He gesticulated wildly towards the fans and is apparently also extremely upset that the police and security service even allowed these scenes.
