Botticelli portrait sells for millions of dollars in New York

A portrait of Botticelli was sold by $ 92.2 million at an auction in the house Sotheby’s of New York Thursday, a world record for the works of the Italian painter.

Picture “Young man holding a locket” from the artist of Renaissance it is one of the few dozen of his portraits known to survive to date. Large format works such as “Birth of Venus” and “Spring” by Sandro Botticelli are exposed in the Uffizi Gallery in Florence.

Sotheby’s said it is one of the featured portraits of any period ever auctioned and reached the second highest price for a painting of a “great master”. “Salvator Mundi”, attributed to Leonardo da Vinci, established the world record in 2017 for any work of a great master with 450 million dollars.

Interested parties by telephone and internet participated in the auction. The identity of the buyer was not disclosed.
