Both ruling party and opposition announce victory in Georgian parliamentary elections – Abroad – News

According to the leader of the “Georgia Dream”, former prime minister billionaire Bidzina Ivanishvili, his party “has won the election for the third time in a row”.

Meanwhile, the leader of the opposition, former President Mikheil Saakashvili, who currently lives in Ukraine and chairs the country’s political and economic reform working group, President Volodymyr Zelensky, has said opposition parties have “achieved a triumphant victory”.

According to a poll of voters at polling stations conducted by pro-government TV channel Imedi TV, Georgia’s Dream has won by 55% of the vote, while another poll by pro-opposition TV channel Mtavari TV shows that the opposition 52% of voters voted for the parties.

“Opposition parties must now form a government of national unity,” Saakashvili said in a televised address from Ukraine.

Demonstrating unusual unity, the Saakashvili-led opposition party, the United National Movement, has joined forces with smaller opposition parties in the run-up to Ivanishvili’s Georgian Dream Party.

According to the Central Election Commission of Georgia, turnout in this vote reached 45.77%.

Given Georgia’s complex electoral system, the final composition of the parliament could only become clear at the end of November.
