Boston Welcomes Back the Rodeo After Nearly a Century
BOSTON – City Hall Plaza has undergone a dramatic transformation, trading concrete for dirt as Boston prepares to host its first rodeo in almost 100 years this Saturday. Crews worked through the night Friday laying down the ground for professional cowboys and cowgirls to compete in a full slate of rodeo events.
The return of the rodeo to Boston marks a revival of a tradition largely absent from the city since 1936. Organized by the professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA), the event offers a unique cultural experience for Bostonians and a significant economic boost for the city’s hospitality sector. The rodeo’s presence signals a growing interest in Western sports and lifestyle in New England, and organizers hope to establish it as an annual event.
The competition will feature all eight PRCA rodeo events, including bull riding, bronc riding, steer wrestling, and barrel racing. “You can expect real bulls, horses, everything,” said Eddie McHugh, one of the event organizers.
Gates open at 2 p.m. on Saturday. While general admission tickets are sold out, VIP tickets remain available on the rodeo’s website: https://www.bostonrodeo.com/.
For those unable to attend the Boston rodeo, the New England Rodeo at the Rochester Fairgrounds on the South Coast offers another opportunity to experience the sport, drawing competitors from across New England and internationally.Data and a schedule of events can be found at https://www.nerodeo.com/.
