Boss Level – Mel Gibson is really a “grandfather”

Boss

Retired soldier Roy Pulver (Frank Grillo) gets into a perverted government project that forces him to live the day of his death over and over again in order to find his killers and stop this seemingly endless suffering …

Director and screenwriter Joe Carnahan became a well-known name in Hollywood thanks to the film remake of the A-Team series, an action star with Liam Neeson in the lead role Between Wolves or the action comedy Chauffeur with Patrick Wilson in the lead role. Carnahan has become a well-known name in the field of action filmmaking, but his chances of greater Hollywood success have been thwarted by the fact that he won’t let himself be talked about. During those years in Carnahan, Carnahan revolved around his own Daredevil trilogy (before the rights returned to Marvel Studios), a video game adaptation of Uncharted or Mizer 3, due to his efforts to defend his vision without major compromises, but mostly a chance for a larger one. a project that would have made this undoubtedly interesting creator a little bigger name never happened. Carnahan will obviously have to make do with his smaller projects as the long-planned Boss Level.

Carnahan had to make do with a smaller budget, more than a decent cast (Frank Grillo is a nice guy, Mel Gibson always pleases, Naomi Watts is still nice, Michelle Yeoh is badly underappreciated) and especially with her script, talents for the action craft and the fact that the film also despite his small budget, it acted as a solid craft of action. So how did it go in the finals? Difficult question!

The basic problem of Boss Level is its very uninteresting and sometimes downright ugly visual. The film is clearly faded in color, the camera is uninteresting and looks really cheap. Maybe there is a problem with the fact that Carnahan had to make do with a smaller amount, but it still freezes when most of the shots evoked at best the beginning work of an amateur filmmaker and at worst the films shot in Bulgaria go straight to DVD and starring Steven Seagal. And this fact really drops a lot on the final impression of Boss Level.

However, Boss Level has an incredible heart and Carnahan has served an interesting action film, which has very interesting ideas, really fun passages, quite decent dialogues / announcements and above all it is really a film that has a heart in the right place. A bit.

Boss Level is a béčko. But it’s a B-side in the better sense of the word. Here, Carnahan more or less works with video game aesthetics and uses the idea of using a time loop in a very interesting way. In addition, Frank Grillo is truly a sympathizer, and you will trust him completely with this more and more death-trained killer. In addition, its protagonist Roy Pulver has incredible motivation and his relationship with his family is well drawn.

Boss Level honestly enjoyed me a lot in the first half, then came a little sobering up and the realization that even though I’m looking at something very unusual, it definitely doesn’t mean I’m looking at any top filmmaker. Also, some twists didn’t work for me, and I found myself that I was expecting a major one in advance before it happened.

Mel Gibson is nice here and in my opinion he enjoyed this role a lot, but there isn’t as much of him as you would expect and it’s a shame. I enjoyed his Clive Ventor and I would very much like to give us a better chance to get to know the film or perhaps draw it more. Unfortunately, the same applies in the finale to the characters Naomi Watts and Michelle Yeoh, thanks to the fact that he is really nice and a successful protagonist, but it doesn’t matter so much.

At the same time, it occurred to me that Carnahan (quite possibly because of the budget) did not break free from the chain as this topic could have allowed him, but I still think that Boss Level is quite an imaginative, entertaining and truly Carnahan filmmaking experience. The first half is definitely better and the final is not satisfactory either, but Carnahan’s action is definitely worth seeing and we just have to hope that he will hopefully get the opportunity to take on a bigger project, where he will also be able to defend his vision. I feel that with a bigger budget, a nicer visual, an even better script (Carnahan was helped by brothers Eddie and Chris Borey, it is not known how much their contribution was known) and more use of the time loop factor, we could talk about one of the best promoters. year. This way you can only talk about a pretty nice spectacle, which proved that Frank Grillo is a nice guy who deserves more acting opportunities, and Carnahan really has the talents for an action film. But something more memorable and more than just the resulting oukey affair could still come out of it ……
