Brandt: “We begged for a goal”
After the next “disappointing result” (Rose), the fans who had traveled with them in the Augsburg Arena grumbled. Rose didn’t want to reprimand his badly decimated and ultimately exhausted staff too harshly. Thorgan Hazard’s strong solo number to make it 1-0 wasn’t enough, because Donyell Malen’s two bad luck with aluminum in the best BVB phase left his strength dwindling. The sovereignty over the game was lost. And FCA equalized with fresh forces from the bench through Joker Noah Sarenren Bazee in the 78th minute. Rose spoke of “ping pong” in the penalty area in view of the defensive confusion when conceding a goal.
“We let the game get out of our hands and begged for a goal,” groaned Dortmund attacking player Julian Brandt. “We should have put the punch,” said Rose in view of the missed 2-0 decision. The “punch” is what this team, which can play dizzy Bundesliga opponents in a top line-up and in a mood to play, is all too often lacking. From Dortmund’s point of view, it is to be hoped that future defense chief Niklas Süle will bring a moving van full of Bayern winning mentality from Munich in the summer.
But Rose is fighting for the rest of the season, which must not splash out now. “I work with the boys and we’re trying to get the most out of the season now,” he announced. However, Rose did not mean that he would be able to prevent FC Bayern from celebrating their tenth year as champions. Second place is Dortmund’s optimum.
