Börse Express – New York Equities Outlook: Only moderate losses according to ECB statements

NEW YORK (dpa-AFX) – The US stock exchanges are heading for an almost unchanged start of trading on Thursday. Like the European stock markets, they should be supported somewhat by the latest statements from the European Central Bank (ECB). The broker IG assessed the leading index Dow Jones Industrial a good hour before the start, only 0.14 percent weaker at 34,982 points and the technology-heavy Nasdaq 100 0.06 percent in the red at 15,611 points. This would mean that the Nadaq 100 would hold its own not far from its recently reached record high – the leading index, on the other hand, is still 1.8 percent short of it.

In the fourth quarter, the acquisition of government and corporate securities as part of the Pepp Corona emergency purchase program is expected to be “moderately” lower than currently, according to the ECB. But both the volume of 1.85 trillion euros and the term until at least the end of March 2022 confirmed the monetary authorities.

There is also no end in sight to the low interest rates in the euro area: the ECB is keeping the key interest rate – as experts also expected – at the record low of zero percent. A possible tightening of the ultra-loose monetary policy with a simultaneous weakening of economic momentum is currently one of the greatest worries of stockholders, as this makes stocks less attractive than bonds.

The few company news before the market got a negative response. The Gamestop stocks dropped by almost 11 percent after disappointing figures. The video game retailer reported an increase in sales of around a quarter thanks to the recovery from the Corona crisis and was able to almost halve the loss. But analysts had expected more. At the beginning of the year, Gamestop made headlines on the stock exchange due to its unusual price capers.

The shares of the Chinese Internet company Netease listed in New York lost almost four and a half percent before the start of trading. The ongoing regulatory efforts of the Chinese leadership put a strain here – most recently they urged domestic companies not to put their pursuit of profit too much in the foreground./gl/jha/
