Boris Becker puts questionable corona theories on Twitter

As a sports fan, you can empathize with Boris Becker. The tennis legend fears that the tennis tournament in Wimbledon could also be canceled. “I hope Wimbledon will wait until the end of April for a decision. The tournament is in the first week of July. Patience is a virtue,” the 52-year-old writes on Twitter. He is worried, that’s understandable. But Becker also uses the short message service to spread questionable theories about the corona crisis.

Boris Becker shares questionable tweets

So he shared the post of a user who wrote: “In 2019, 650,000 people worldwide died from the flu Boris in 2019 – these are the official figures of the WHO. The annual death rate in Italy is 1.1 percent, about 630,000 people. If 800 people die from Corona every day, not even half of it will be reached. ” Becker replied to the post and asked himself and his followers (over 600,000, after all) why they weren’t read in the media.

However, the theory of the user is wrong on several points: Although many people die from influenza, the flu, there is a vaccination against the virus on the one hand, and on the other a basic immunity within the population.

Neither exists in the case of the novel corovirus Covid-19 (yet), which means that the pathogen spreads quickly. So if you didn’t take the strict measures that are being taken almost everywhere in the world, too many people would be in a short time fall ill. Some of these would be looked after in intensive care units, which is why they would quickly become crowded. In this case, not only the recovery of corona patients, but also everyone else in the hospital can no longer be guaranteed.

Users criticize Becker, others defend him

Becker quickly received criticism for his publicly expressed doubts. He would misuse his long range, according to the accusation. The former athlete then retweeted a defense of one of his fans. “On Twitter and especially in a democracy everyone (athletes) can freely express his opinion (also about biology),” wrote the user.

Of course he is right. But you can also just as freely express that these are not opinions, but facts. And that Becker is simply wrong. One can only hope that Wimbledon can take place in July – because what the Leimener as an expert says on the edge of the tennis court has more quality than his tweets.
