BONNIE A. PERRY – Lesbian is new bishop of the Episcopal Church in Michigan

The diocese of the Episcopal Church in Michigan has its first openly lesbian bishop.

Reverend Bonnie A. Perry was consecrated and ordained on Saturday during a ceremony in Dearborn, a suburb of Detroit.

She was elected last June at St. Paul’s Cathedral in Detroit. Perry was expected to be formally received and take your seat on Sunday in the church.

Reverend Mary Glasspool was the first lesbian bishop of the church in 2010 in Los Angeles, according to the Episcopal Church.

Reverend Barbara Harris became the first bishop when she was ordained in 1989 in Massachusetts. Reverend Gene Robinson became the first openly gay bishop of the Episcopal Church in 2004.

Perry said Friday during a press conference at the Detroit church that she is aware of what her election as a bishop means to other people.

“If you look at the scriptures, Jesus said absolutely nothing about homosexuality,” he said. “And again and again, we see that Jesus is always with people who were perceived by others as marginalized, as strangers or less than worthy.”
