The largest park of green infrastructures in Africa, Parque Urbano, is located in the Port city of Beira and was inaugurated this Saturday by the President of the Republic, Filipe Nyusi.

The development occupies an area of ​​45 thousand square meters and inside you can find sports fields, playgrounds, restaurants and bars in addition to other spaces for leisure and fun.

With the construction of this large undertaking, the water management of the Chivive River is guaranteed, which will minimize flooding in the Ponta-G? A and Chaimite neighborhoods, which affected around 30 thousand families, with river water control.

Speaking on the sidelines of the inauguration of the largest urban park in Africa, the President of the Republic considered the work “magnificent and environmentally friendly” and that “demonstrates the capacity that man has to transform nature”, in a clear allusion to the impacts brought by Cyclone Idai that completely destroyed the city of Beira.

«The impacts of climatic phenomena have become greater in the city of Beira, where population growth and human activity, especially through the unruly use of land and the destruction of native vegetation, have been one of the factors that contribute to the intensity of climate change », Said the President of the Republic.

In his speech, the Head of State recalled that due to their geographical location, Beira and other Mozambican cities, are below sea level, making them vulnerable to extreme phenomena, the construction of infrastructure being important in the words of Filipe Nyusi. structures resilient to climate change.

The government official calls on the population to use the site well and that it does not serve as a shelter for criminals and with outbreaks of crime and / or garbage disposal. The works cost the state and partners coffers around 36 million euros.
