‘Boeing did not report the 737 MAX adjustment to the aviation authority’

Boeing presented the MCAS, which pushes the nose down to prevent stalling, as an adaptation of the jet’s existing speed trim system, with limited range and use. When the MCAS was later made more important, the FAA was not adequately informed about it.

“Boeing has not provided FAA with certification documents detailing the change,” the report from the Inspector General of the Department of Transportation said. This report has yet to be published, but has already been reviewed by Reuters news agency.

It also states that a risk analysis by the FAA after the first crash showed that the device did not meet the safety guidelines. The risk was estimated to be 2.68 deaths per 1 million flight hours, while the guideline is a maximum of 1 death per 10 million flight hours.

Boeing has now made new adjustments to the MCAS to improve safety. Test flights have been carried out since this week. The aircraft manufacturer hopes to receive permission later this year to use the MAX again for commercial flights.
