Body found in IJsselmeer, suspected of missing sailor NOW

Bystanders found a body in the IJsselmeer near Kornwerderzand on a Monday evening. Police suspect that it is the man who threw overboard from a sailing yacht on Thursday afternoon and has been missing ever since.

The body has since been recovered by emergency workers, Police Fryslân says.

The man was Thursday sailing with a group on the IJsselmeer and got into the water after being hit by the boom. The other passengers immediately sounded the alarm after the accident.

The Royal Dutch Rescue Company (KNRM) came on the spot that day with several units and spent more than four hours looking for the man who had been thrown overboard. The search was also continued on Friday and Saturday. After the search yielded nothing on Saturday afternoon, the search was definitively discontinued by the KNRM.

According to Omrop Fryslân the Monitoring the Water on the IJsselmeer team continued the search on Monday.
