The Coast Guard in Miami said it received a message from a man who rescued a man “clung to an overturned boat about 45 miles east of Fort Pierce Bay.”
The survivor said the boat left Bimini, the westernmost region of the Bahamas, but encountered bad weather and capsized. Bimini is located 217 kilometers from Fort Pierce Bay.
According to the victim, no one was wearing a life jacket.
Smugglers are reported to be using the Bahamas as a starting point to bring people from other Caribbean countries such as Haiti to the United States.
