The US Coast Guard is searching for scores of people believed to have been on a boat that capsized off the Florida coast. It was probably due to a storm. One survivor was rescued.
A boat capsized about 70 kilometers east of the Florida coast, and the US Coast Guard is now looking for several people. A survivor had therefore clung to the capsized boat before he was finally rescued.
According to him, there were 39 other people on board. The boat was probably en route from the Bahamas to the United States when it got caught in a storm. “According to the survivor, no one was wearing a life jacket,” the Coast Guard said.
Alleged human smuggling
The emergency services are looking for possible survivors with ships and from the air. A US Coast Guard spokesman said the crossing was suspected to be human smuggling.
The Bahamas are known as a stopover point for gangs of people smugglers who want to bring refugees and migrants to the United States.
