BMW iX M60: output 619 hp, “maximum” 250 km / h and range over 500 km

The BMW iX electric SUV has seen its most powerful variant yet, which bears the M60 designation. It is supposed to represent the temporary peak of the possibilities of electric drives of the carmaker, which is already deploying their fifth generation.

Among the main elements, in addition to improved batteries with a higher energy density, are more efficient engines with an efficiency of over 90% and a reduced content of precious metals. As is customary with current electric cars, when it comes to an all-wheel drive car, it usually has two electric motors, each on one axle. The BMW iX M60 is no exception. The rear electric motor is capable of delivering up to 489 hp, the front has 258 hp. When both work at the same time, the total output is 619 horsepower. In normal driving conditions, however, the car is powered exclusively by the rear engine, so it is a rear wheel for most driving situations.

We probably agree that while we may have a different view of the iX’s design, the value of performance is sure to make everyone happy. The torque is 1015 Nm in sport mode, and even up to 1100 Nm for short periods when the launch control function is activated. Then this BMW accelerates from 0 to 100 km / h in just 3.8 seconds. Maximum speed has also been increased. While regular versions of the BMW iX have a “maximum” limited to 200 km / h (and even so, it’s more than most competing cars, where it’s 160 or 180 km / h), the iX M60 can travel up to 250 km / h.

Such performance would not be possible without a new higher density battery. The total capacity of the battery is 111.5 kWh, of which 105.2 kWh can be used. In addition to the classic 11 kW AC charging, which you will use mainly from your home wallbox, you can of course use fast DC charging. The maximum charging power is 200 kW and BMW states that from 10 to 80% capacity, the battery can be charged in 35 minutes. A range of 150 km can be obtained in 10 minutes of charging if you start with a battery level of around 10%. However, all this provided that you have such a charger available. You’ll wait a few hours to fully charge most of the 50kW public chargers.

Home charging with alternating current from a 400V socket will then take ten hours when the battery is fully discharged. You will wait about thirty hours to charge from a standard 230V socket. The stated range according to the WLTP standard is 499 to 566 km. However, it differs a bit with the stated standard consumption of 24.7 to 21.6 kWh per 100 km, which, according to the recalculation from the usable battery capacity, would be enough for a range of “only” 426 to 487 km.

BMW boasts a calibration of the drive, which, thanks to the control electronics, reacts faster and without the parasitic moments and losses that would occur in a car with a conventional internal combustion engine with a classic cardan shaft and transmissions. Compared to other iX versions, the iX M60 version has a differently tuned air suspension with automatic ground clearance control and a differently set steering. There are, of course, a few different design elements and even a specific “artificial” sound of the car, in the creation of which film composer Hans Zimmer also took part.

Now there is only no publication of the price, which BMW will probably do only when the car is launched on the market. Sales are scheduled to begin in June and the Dingolfing plant will take care of production.
