Last month, Apple officially announced CarKey functionality during WWDC 2020. It is also known that BMW drivers can be one of the first to use the new functionalities. Support has now been added to the BMW Connected app for both iPhone and Apple Watch.
Unfortunately, the app is aleles accessible in the United States. As a result, we still have to wait for the functionality in the Netherlands. The description of the BMW Connected app has added that the CarKey key can be added. The key can then be used via Apple’s Wallet app. The Wallet app can be used for both iPhone and Apple Watch.
With the new functionality it is possible to remove the BMW from the lock, and then lock it again via the iPhone or Apple Watch.
The CarKey functionality comes to a number of BMWs, namely the following models. A condition on the following is that they are manufactured after 1 July 2020:
1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, X5, X6, X7, X5M, X6M en Z4
In order for the functionality to work, a minimum iOS 13.6 is also required on the device. You also need at least an iPhone XR or iPhone XS or an Apple Watch Series 5.
