blu-ray players Samsung completely unusable after update

Imagine you watched a movie on blu-ray, went to bed and want to neatly store the disc the next morning. The next day your blu-ray player suddenly stops working. The device will restart forever and you will not be able to remove the disc. This happened to tens of thousands of Samsung customers.

The Korean manufacturer has permanently disabled a large number of Blu-ray players. An incorrect software update is automatically installed and creates a so-called bootloop. It rains complaints in the meantime. Samsung wants to replace the devices, an expensive operation.

Samsung pusht fatale update

A week ago, the first complaints about blu-ray players who continue to restart themselves permanently surfaced. Users quickly discovered that a software update was the culprit. Samsung has withdrawn the update after complaints arose, but that turned out to be too late for many consumers. Only devices that are not connected to the internet still work.

There is also no easy way to restore the devices. Normally, a bug update is not such a problem, as most modern Blu-ray players have a USB port. New firmware can be installed via USB sticks. However, Samsung has damaged its devices to such an extent that they no longer even go into ‘recovery mode’ to read a USB stick.

Replacing is expensive joke

And now? Samsung let us know that the only solution is to replace the motherboard of the blu-ray players. Consumers must report to the helpdesk. Setting up such an operation and the associated infrastructure is an expensive joke. The software update may have cost a few thousand euros to make, but setting up a global replacement program will cost a lot more.

There is also still much uncertainty about the handling of the problem. A Dutch user reports that he has 97 euro shipping costs must pay to have the motherboard replaced, while a British consumer says that everything was arranged for free. For reference, these are the affected models: BD-E5900, BD-J5100, BD-J5500, BD-J5700, BD-J5900, BD-JM51, BD-JM57C, HT-J4200, HT-J4500, HT-J4530, HT -J4550, HT-J5500W, HT-J5550W, HT-J5520WK, HT-J5530.

Be careful with internet access

Moral of this story? If a device such as a Blu-ray player does not need to function on the Internet, you are often advised not to connect it. If you are missing apps that you might be able to use on such a device, then one Apple TV or Chromecast more reliable and almost certainly also better for your privacy and security.
