Bloomberg: Sunak is working to restore cooperation with the EU after Brexit in private

British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has instructed the government to work out plans to restore relations between the UK and the EU after Brexit, Bloomberg reported, citing anonymous senior officials. The UK plans to increase cooperation with the EU in the areas of defence, migration, trade, energy and international standards.

As writes BloombergThe UK plans to announce a decision soon on a long-standing dispute with the EU over trade agreements for Northern Ireland. Against this background, the government of Rishi Sunak is going to continue working to strengthen relations with the EU.

Under the current agreement between the EU and the UK, one of the provinces of Ireland, Ulster, has retained membership in the European customs union in order to avoid the restoration of a common border with Ireland. Because of this, customs control needs to be introduced between the UK and Northern Ireland. This causes discontent in London.

According to Bloomberg, the UK and the EU may start to cooperate more closely in the field of security, as the armies of Great Britain and France are considered the strongest in Europe. The UK is also interested in closer cooperation with the EU in the export of defense goods. According to the agency, the UK hopes to reduce the amount of trade in the defense sector of non-European countries with Russia and China.

According to Bloomberg, work to restore relations between the EU and the UK began against the backdrop of the consequences of Russia’s military operation in Ukraine. At the same time, Rishi Sunak’s government may face problems due to criticism of Eurosceptic politicians and members of the ruling Conservative Party.

The UK is fully out of the EU by 2020. This happened after the 2016 referendum, in which 51.6% of the country’s citizens voted to leave the EU.
