Blood donation: stocks are low, giving is urgent

“Our blood reserves are today below the alert threshold. We have in stock between 80,000 and 85,000 bags of concentrated red blood cells. However, it would take 100,000 to hold serenely for two weeks”, notes Christelle Guiral, communications officer at L’EFS Center-Pays de la Loire.

10,000 donations per day to avoid out of stock

Donors are scarce and this worries theFrench blood establishment. There was the containment effect with the cancellation of numerous mobile collections, particularly in universities and businesses.

But this phenomenon persists, even in a period of deconfinement, with the continuation of telework or even unavailable premises.

Since May 11, donor attendance has been declining. It is therefore urgent to raise the level of reserves before summer and to keep it afloat until September.

The EFS needs 10,000 donations a day so as not to be out of stock. However, in summer, it is usual, donations are fewer.

An appointment to give blood

Today, hospitals are rescheduling operations canceled during those long weeks of confinement. The need for blood therefore increases. Hence the call for general mobilization.

From now on, making an appointment is recommended by the French Blood Establishment to facilitate the management of donations during collections or in the 6 donation centers in Pays de la Loire (Laval, Angers, La Roche-sur-Yon, Nantes, Saint-Nazaire and Le Mans ).

This makes it possible to better manage the care of donors during donation while respecting physical distancing measures. Wearing a mask is also compulsory for donors.

June 14, World Blood Donor Day

It is an essential annual meeting, united and civic. World Blood Donor Day honors those who are committed throughout the year.

On this occasion and for the second year, the EFS launches the operation “#Take the baton, 1 month to give all!”. Donors are invited to sponsor a loved one to become a new donor.

“Objective: to form a large chain of collective solidarity thanks to this handover to help patients who need blood transfusions”, writes in a press release the EFS.
