Blinken requested talks with Lavrov

US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken

The Russian Foreign Ministry said that Sergei Lavrov “will pay attention to this request when time permits.”

US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken intends to have a telephone conversation with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov. This was announced on Thursday, July 28, by State Department spokesman Ned Price at a briefing, writes Ukrinform.

“We have expressed interest, we have made it clear to Russia that we intend to have a telephone conversation between Secretary of State Blinken and Minister Lavrov,” Price said.

According to him, Moscow confirmed receipt of the request.

“This conversation will not become negotiations over Ukraine and does not signal the normalization of Russian-American relations,” the State Department spokesman said.

Russian media considerthat the American side intends to raise the issue of the exchange of prisoners between Russia and the United States – Russian businessman Viktor Bout for two American citizens Paul Whelan and Brittney Griner, who are in custody in Russia.

RIA Novosti writethat Price voiced three topics proposed by Washington: to discuss the problem of American citizens serving sentences in Russia, the export of Ukrainian grain, and the United States intends to warn against the annexation of Ukrainian territories.

Blinken has previously stated that Russia’s plan to carry out in the occupied territories Ukraine’s fictitious referenda to annex these lands will not work.
