BlackBerry OS Injected Dead, What Happens to Users?

User BlackBerry had to say goodbye to the old phone because the operating system used by the iconic phone was turned off. Then what about the fate of users who are still loyal to their BlackBerry phones?

BlackBerry services that are no longer supported are BlackBerry 7.1 OS and earlier, BlackBerry 10, and BlackBerry PlayBook OS 2.1 and earlier. Support for devices running these operating systems ends on January 4, 2022.

As a result, devices running the above operating systems, either via cellular networks or Wi-Fi, cannot perform basic functions such as telephone calls, SMS, data, and even emergency calls to 911.

The termination of support also applies to users with a BlackBerry hosted email address or if you receive email redirected from a BlackBerry hosted email address on another platform.

Business users with an Enhanced Sim Based License (ESBL) or Identity Based License (IBL) will also be affected. In addition to the BlackBerry OS and BlackBerry PlayBook OS operating systems, the Canadian company also said that applications such as BlackBerry Link, BlackBerry Desktop Manager, BlackBerry World, BlackBerry Protect, BlackBerry Messenger, and BlackBerry Blend will have limited functionality.

The good news, if you use a device BlackBerry running the Android operating system your phone will work as usual. Unless you receive the email redirected from an email address hosted by BlackBerry, or have an ESBL or IBL.

Meanwhile, BBM Enterprise and BBM Enterprise for Individual Use will continue to function on other platforms, as quoted from Cnet, Saturday (8/1/2022).

So what will happen to user data? All data stored on BlackBerry that is no longer needed or relevant will be deleted, destroyed, or anonymized. You can also contact [email protected] to request data deletion.

To move data, BlackBerry’s FAQ page advises users to use a new phone. If you have an email address hosted by BlackBerry or receive email redirected from an email address hosted by BlackBerry, you’ll also need a new email address.

Business users on BES5 should also move to the new product BlackBerry New Unified Endpoint Management and BlackBerry Suits. If you are still using ESBL or IBL, you should look for a standard license.

If you want to back up media on your phone, visit the official BlackBerry page to find out the backup steps for each device and operating system.
