BKA investigates 43-year-old Germans

In the case of Madeleine “Maddie” McCann, who has been missing for 13 years, the Braunschweig public prosecutor’s office has launched a murder investigation against a 43-year-old German. As the Federal Criminal Police Office announced on Wednesday evening, the accused is a multiple-criminal sex offender who is currently serving a longer prison term in other matters. Maddie McCann had mysteriously disappeared from a holiday resort in Portugal in May 2007. The parents have been looking for their child since then and still hope that Maddie is alive.

According to the BKA, the German lived regularly in the Algarve between 1995 and 2007, including for a few years in a house between Lagos and Praia da Luz – the place where Maddie McCann disappeared. “According to the information available here, he pursued several odd jobs in the Lagos area during this time, including in the catering trade,” said the BKA.

The accused is said to have had various odd jobs in Praia da Luz, for example in the catering trade. In addition, according to the BKA, there are indications that he also makes his living through crimes such as burglaries in hotels and apartments and drug trafficking.

The investigators did not give any further details on Wednesday evening. The Portuguese judiciary initially closed its investigation in 2008, but resumed it in October 2013 due to new evidence. The British police were also under investigation.

International wanted

The public prosecutor’s office in Braunschweig is involved in the investigation because the 43-year-old had his last residence there before he went abroad. In the investigation, the BKA works closely with the British and Portuguese police authorities.

The BKA called on the public to help with the investigation. In the ZDF program “Aktenzeichen XY … unresolved”, BKA official Christian Hoppe asked viewers to report any relevant information on the case to the BKA or any police station. Madeleine’s parents Kate and Gerry McCann were also guests on the show in 2013.
