A 21-year-old man from Birmingham, England, has been sentenced to life in prison after intentionally running down and killing a 22-year-old man riding an electric off-road bike. Abdirahman Ibrahim was convicted of murder for using his car as a weapon against Liam Jones in an incident that shocked the Yardley area of Birmingham on Aug. 1,2023.

The Trial and Sentencing

During the trial, Judge smith KC emphasized the deliberate nature of Ibrahim’s actions, stating that he pursued Jones and Johnson in a persistent and deliberate way. The judge further noted, You became aware of Liam Jones and Tayzhon Johnson as you entered the Coventry Road and you changed your direction to follow them.

Ibrahim initially admitted to the lesser charge of manslaughter, claiming the collision was accidental following a race. However, the jury found him guilty of murder after a retrial in February. Critical evidence included CCTV footage showing Jones performing a stand-up wheelie near Ibrahim’s car less than 10 minutes before the deadly encounter.

The judge highlighted Ibrahim’s callous disregard for Jones’s life promptly after the collision, stating, Your actions in the immediate aftermath of this deliberate collision were governed by a selfish desire to escape from the scene and involved no care for Mr. Jones.

Adding to the severity of the case, Ibrahim’s brother, Abdullahi Ibrahim, was sentenced to two years and 10 months in prison after pleading guilty to assisting an offender. He had attempted to conceal the vehicle in the hours following the murder.
