Maria Vassilakou had done it. A separate hashtag was dedicated to her on social media during her first term as Vienna’s Vice Mayor. No matter what went wrong in the city – and it was just the weather – it was ironically commented on with #thanksvassilakou.
Her successor Birgit Hebein is well on the way to polarizing equally strongly. That is surprising. Because in the beginning the criticism of Hebein was quite the opposite. Hebein was too colorless, it was an easy game for the SPÖ, it said.
Today – 10 meeting zones, 20 pedestrian streets and 4 pop-up cycle paths later – nobody would say that anymore.
Hebein has developed a clear profile. But at what price?
