Bird flu has been diagnosed at a broiler farm in Son. To prevent the virus from spreading, the approximately 170,000 animals on the farm are culled by the Dutch Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority (NVWA).
It is probably a highly pathogenic variant that leads to serious illness or death in (water) birds. People do not have to become seriously ill from this, reports the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment.
Also measures for other companies
Another poultry farm is located in an area of one kilometer around the affected farm. This company will be blocked, sampled and intensively monitored in the coming days for, among other things, the health of the animals.
Eight other poultry farms are located within the 3-kilometre zone around the broiler farm, where samples are also taken. A transport ban applies with immediate effect to the 27 other poultry farms located within a radius of 10 kilometers from the affected farm. This ban applies to birds and eggs for breeding and consumption, but also, for example, to bird manure and used litter.
It is also prohibited in the 10-kilometre zone to hunt ducks or to hunt in areas where this could disturb waterfowl. This zone is bordered by Schijndel, Lieshout, Eindhoven and Oirschot.
In the past year, bird flu in our province was also detected in Sint-Oedenrode and Willemstad. In other places, poultry farmers were indirectly affected by this contagious disease.
