Biofuel – Clariant’s sunliquid technology also works with oil palm waste

A feasibility study has shown that empty fruit bunches and leaves from oil palms can also be successfully converted into cellulosic ethanol. The yield in the process is good, Clariant said in a communiqué on Monday. And Indonesia has a “huge” potential for untapped biomass that can be converted into cellulosic ethanol. The final results of the study have just been presented at the Hanover Fair.

The sunliquid process makes it possible to dissolve sugar from plant residues – existing customers use wheat or corn stalks, for example – by means of a chemical reaction and then ferment it into fuel. The resulting cellulosic ethanol saves around 95 percent of CO2 emissions compared to fossil gasoline, Clariant said on previous occasions.
