Development coronavirus vaccine in America and Russia is quite encouraging. Three companies in the two countries claim their vaccines are effective at preventing Covid-19.

Even though it is still in the third phase of clinical trials, Pfizer Inc said the experimental results of the vaccine in the US were able to prevent Covid-19 by more than 90%. Meanwhile, Sputnik V from Russia claims the vaccine is effective up to 92%.

Most recently, Moderna Inc said its vaccine was able to prevent corona virus infection by 94.5%. The vaccine made by Bio Farma together with Sinovac is also in the third phase of clinical trials.

The plan, clinical trials will be completed at the end of this year. If the clinical trial is completed and an emergency use permit from the Food and Drug Administration (BPOM) is completed, Bio Farma can immediately produce and distribute it throughout Indonesia.

Bio Farma Corporate Secretary Bambang Heriyanto said Bio Farma was able to distribute vaccines throughout Indonesia with a cold chain or cold chain. Cold chain is a method of distribution of vaccines with low temperature storage rooms.

According to Bambang, the distribution of the Covid-19 vaccine developed by Bio Farma will not be different from other types of vaccines. All vaccines currently circulating also use cold chains, such as measles, DPT, polio, BCG, and others.

“We (Bio Farma and the Ministry of Health) already have decades of experience handling vaccines. So that the infrastructure already exists,” said Bambang to Katadata.co.id on Monday (16/11).

Head of the Department of Epidemiology, University of Indonesia (UI), Tri Yunis Miko Wahyono, said that Indonesia already has a capable vaccine distribution network. In fact, there are several health centers that already have cold storage rooms powered by solar or using diesel.

This is to anticipate blackouts that often occur in several parts of Indonesia. “Do not be afraid that there is no electricity, our puskesmas are already conditioned. They have freezer which can store the vaccine at 2-8 degrees Celsius, “said Tri.

With adequate infrastructure, Tri also believes that the government will be able to carry out vaccinations up to 80% by December 2021. So that herd immunity in Indonesia can be achieved by the end of next year.

“We’ll just wait for the existing cases to recover to get out of the pandemic,” he said.

To speed up recovery, Tri encouraged the government to continue to improve testing and tracking. Both of these are important to ensure that an infected person can get treatment.

On the other hand, the community must be disciplined in implementing health protocols. You do this by applying 3M, namely using a mask, washing your hands with soap, and keeping your distance.
