NEW YORK — Long Island music legend Billy Joel will wrap up his concert residency at Madison Square Garden next year, Joel announced during a press conference with New York City Mayor Eric Adams.

Joel will finish his residency, a record-breaking concert series, in July 2024, after 10 years.

The first of Joel’s last 10 concerts will take place on October 20 of this year.

The “Piano Man” broke the record for the most performances at Madison Square Garden, with 136, and for the most consecutive performances, with 90.

“I’m a little shocked that it lasted this long. My team tells me we could still sell tickets, but ten years, 150 shows, that’s good enough!” Joel said. “I remember the first time we played at Madison Square Garden, it was the pinnacle of my career. I thought, ‘Oh my gosh, I’m headlining Madison Square Garden. Everybody knows when you play the Garden.”

Adams described Joel as quintessential New York.

“There’s only one thing that’s more New York than Billy Joel: a Billy Joel concert at MSG,” Adams said. “For more than 50 years, Billy’s music has defined our city and united us. On behalf of 8.5 million New Yorkers. Congratulations, Billy, on a historic run of sold-out shows at MSG, and thank you for a lifetime bringing joy to all of us.”

“To our audience, I want to thank you for coming to our shows for so long. It’s hard to end, even with 150 shows in a lifetime. I just want to thank you all for the amazing thing that happened here,” Joel continued.

The announcement of the end of his residency comes a couple of weeks after Joel was reportedly selling his sprawling 26-acre Long Island waterfront estate for $49 million.

Joel’s real estate agent told Newsday that the Center Island property was purchased in 2002 for $22.5 million.

The Oyster Bay Harbor home has no shortage of great amenities. The property’s online listing features a pool, bowling alley, helipad, and a 3-bedroom beach house.

The main house, over 20,000 square feet, has an elevator to all floors. The five-bedroom, eight-bathroom home is currently undergoing renovations.

But that is not all. The property also has a guest apartment within the main house, as well as a bowling alley and an indoor swimming pool.

The property, nicknamed Middlesea, was previously listed for sale in 2008 for $32.5 million, but did not sell.
