Billie Eilish – the coolest skater girl in the world – culture

It has been a long time since a similar figure appeared on the world stage and took it by storm as much as Billie Eilish, who only turned 18 in December. Most recently it was perhaps Amy Winehouse with her distinctive soul voice, her Motown songs and her consistent fifties style. Amy raised the golden years of soul – and her private problems intensified interest in her as a figure, but also as a musician.

And then the usual pop circus came for a long time, until Billie Eilish came on the scene. It does not resurrect a golden era, it creates one. Her talent is unique, at the age of four she wrote her first song for the Los Angeles Children’s Chorus.

The text was about how it falls into a black hole. This was the start of her topic, which she later elaborated in a variety of ways and in almost cinematic texts. She writes about black despair and teenage fears, about the pain that is dissolved in the beauty of her melodic songs. Her music, which she produces with her older brother, is also absolutely new. It doesn’t really fit any genre, it’s as dark as it is melodic, extremely contemporary and at the same time timeless.

Loose clothes, great self-confidence

And there is her style, which seems effortless, but which is just as distinctive as her music. Unlike her competitors Ariana Grande, Taylor Swift or even Lady Gaga, Eilish uses conventional terms of beauty with originality. She likes to appear with a bedroom look and pout. In wide t-shirts and skater shoes, she looks like a classic skater girl, only that her clothes are littered with oversized Gucci and Louis Vuitton logos, plus she wears 8 cm long fingernails in poison green and the same hair. With her emphatically wide dresses, she wanted to prevent her from being sexualized, she told the press. And that was very well received, as was shown when they appeared at the last Zurich Openair.

The audience consisted largely of teen girls who can identify with Billie’s problems, but by no means only. Most of these teenagers had taken their parents, siblings and friends with them. They didn’t just come to accompany their offspring – many of these parents were obviously enthusiastic about music themselves and Eilish fans.

She is happy about her success, but it plays a subordinate role. Eilish BBC said she would make music either way, even if no one would like it. It was the same with her hit “Ocean Eyes”, which she recorded with her brother for her dance teacher. She shared it on Soundcloud for the teacher, went to bed – and woke up the next morning with a full inbox – all people who wanted to hear more from her.

Now she has won five Grammys, as the youngest artist ever, including the most important two for her song “Bad Guy” and her album “When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?”. Back then, people from the music industry had told her that there was no hit on the album, she said in an interview.

Now the album has not only produced the hit of last year, but was also a hit as a whole. And Eilish the artist of the year. If that’s not good news.
