Sotheby’s New York hosted its very first auction of hip-hop souvenirs this week. And that has generated a lot of money. For example, a plastic crown that Notorious BIG wore three days before his death in 1997 in a famous photo went under the hammer for $ 594,750.
The photo was taken by photographer Barron Claiborne, who bought the crown for $ 6. The rapper had signed the crown. Its value was estimated in advance between 200,000 and 300,000 euros.
Sixteen-year-old Tupac Shakur’s love letters – 22 addressed to his sweetheart Kathy Loy – fetched $ 75,600. “I would like to be less sensitive and less annoying,” the rapper writes in one of those letters. ‘What I feel has to do with my insecurities, I have to learn to deal with them myself.’
An original copy of Rammellzee & K-Rob’s ‘Beat bop’ from 1983, one of the very first hip-hop records to ever feature Jean-Michel Basquiat artwork, sold for $ 126,000. It was estimated at $ 3,500.
