Big scam in hydro-alcoholic gels sold in Senegal

The Fundamental Institute of Black Africa (Ifan), which studied the quality of hydroalcoholic gels, reveals a big scandal on the issue. In the report which sanctioned its work, Ifan informs that out of 14 types of gels used in Senegal, the 09 are not of good quality.

While health authorities constantly recommend that populations use hydroalcoholic gels to stem the spread of Covid-19, some people have not been shy about putting poor quality gels on the market. Indeed, these products do not meet the standards set by the World Health Organization. The big scam was ventilated by Ifan, which carried out a study on hydro-alcoholic gels during this period of the coronavirus pandemic. According to the report produced by Ifan, no importer or seller of gels has presented their product for verification to the Senegalese standardization office.

According to those in charge of the Ifan laboratory who worked on all the samples sold in Senegal, “most of the gels sold to populations do not contain alcohol to kill viruses and bacteria”. However, the standards defined by the WHO on gels are in particular the sufficient presence of alcohol, glycerin and hydrogen peroxide. Unfortunately, these standards are not respected in Senegal.

For Dr Nourou Diaby who participated in the study, out of the 14 types of gels sold in Senegal and analyzed by Ifan, only two fully satisfied the tests. Three others met the criteria moderately. The rest of the brands are good for the trash. It is not recommended to use them. In other words, the 09 other hydro-alcoholic gels used by the Senegalese are of poor quality and do not kill any virus.

Therefore, the best method is to wash your hands regularly with soap and water to kill viruses and bacteria to prevent Covid-19. On another register, we learned from the Ministry of Health yesterday that Senegal has recorded 130 additional cases following the last tests carried out (1,421 samples). These new contaminations consist of 55 contact cases, 02 imported cases registered at Aibd and Djoffior and 73 community cases. These come from Ziguinchor 09, Mbour 07, Bignona 04, Kolda 04, Kédougou 03, Mékhé 03, Tivaouane 03, Bounkiling 02, Fann 02, Nord Foire 02, Richard-Toll 02, Sacré-Cœur 02, Saraya 02, Thiès 02, Touba 02, Yoff 02, Almadies 01, Diourbel 01, Fatick 01, Foundiougne 01, Gibraltar 01, Guédiawaye 01, Joal 01, Khombole 01, Keur Massar 01, Louga 01, Maristes 01, Mbacké 01, Pikine 01, Rufisque 01 , Sédhiou 01 and Vélingara 01.

It should be noted that 38 patients are in a particularly serious clinical condition and are in the intensive care units. After deploring a case of death during the day of Thursday (August 20), Senegal now has a total of 262 deaths linked to Covid-19.

The improvement in this grayness is the healing of 115 patients who returned home. As of August 21, 2020, Senegal has 12,689 confirmed cases, including 8,165 cured, 262 dead and therefore 4,261 under treatment.
